Corruption and bureaucracy in the system prompts a journalist (Shabana Azmi) into writing a fictitiuos letter and printing it. The letter written by a so called Azaad claims that he has decided to end his life by leaping off a building that is the symbol of prevailing corruption. The paper receives strong reactions to this article and decides to get a nobody to play the part of Azaad thinking that he will do as he is told.
The man chosen is Amitabh Bachchan who for the lack of money and any form of security agrees to play the part.

He soon discovers that Azaad is no longer a part that he is playing but has become him. He actively campaigns against prevailing corruption and injustice. The owner of the newspaper however had different plans as he wanted to use Azaad to become the Chief Minister. He exposes Azaad for what he truly is, a nobody that has been lying to the public all along. Azzad proves to them that not only he but all of them are Azaad by leaping off the building on the day that he had said.

This film won Javed Akhtar the award for best dialogues.
