SHOLAY (1975)

Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) is a valiant police officer who captures the dreaded dacoit Gabbar singh (Amjad Khan in his debut and most memorable role) bringing him to justice. Gabbar escapes from prison, murders the Thakur's family and hacks off the Thakur's arms.
Thus begins a tale of revenge by the Thakur who hires two petty thieves Veeru and Jai (Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan) and uses them to capture Gabbar.

Ramesh Sippy brilliantly directed this film and gave to the Hindi screen a film that would create characters that still remain etched in the movie-goers mind. From Basanti, the loud mouthed tangewaali (Hema Malini) to Soorma Bhopali (Jagdeep), from the Angrezon ke zamane ke jailor (Asrani) to Thakur's widowed daughter in law (Jaya Bhaduri), this film set a trend of "Spaghetti western" Hindi films.

Superbly shot with breathtaking action sequences including a train robbery never bettered in Hindi movies, the film ran for over five years in the same theatre and is regarded as the first mega blockbuster.

The dialogues of this film gained immense popularity and are used in T.V. commercials even 25 years after the film release.
